Re writers in TYR having more name recognition, here's something interesting. In a roundtable of editors (of TYR, The Drift, n+1, and The Point), Meghan O'Rourke stood out from the others in stating that "we do publish a fair amount of agented work." Whereas at The Drift, "a truly tiny, vanishingly small fraction of what we publish comes from agents." So for some of big-name writers in TYR, their agents are clearly arranging the placements. Interesting to juxtapose that with your estimation that the quality of the big-name pieces was generally lower.

This was a very interesting review, as always!

When I worked there as Assistant Editor, I tried sending up plot-heavier short stories with genre elements from our slush. No dice.
