"Can't there ever be a murder?" is what I think every time I open a lit mag, and every time I'm about to submit to one. From the submitting side the incentive is plain: a story that promises the reader enjoyment reads as unserious, so you learn to withhold. The mix isn't only an editorial choice, it's trained into what gets sent in.
