This line was a classic ...."mini-genre - millennials who realize their lives are empty and meaningless" - I certainly won't waste my time attempting any of these novels!
Although I do have a novel by Claire Lombardo on my bookshelf. It's called "The Most Fun We Ever Had" which does sound quite fun, so I picked it up in a book exchange telephone box - do you have those in the US? It's like Doctor Who's Tardis but red not blue, and now that everyone uses mobiles, the telephone apparatus inside is taken out as redundant and the space filled with books people can leave there and take away.
But now I realise maybe the title could be turned on its head and instead of being a fun book, it might be a dismal one and that's why it was left in a telephone box.
for woman in academia going through breakup millennial I liked Weike Wang Chemistry
Mercury retrograde, I meant millennial woman in academia
This was a wonderful piece — thank you! Your work is so much fun to read!
Your dry sense of humour really makes me laugh!

I liked the Ten Year Affair for the reasons you mentioned. I tried a Lombardo and I felt it was overstuffed.
I recommend Five Weeks in the Country by Francine Prose. Given your reading tastes, I think you will like or love it.
Big fan of The New Me and Jillian. Haven’t caught up with her latest yet (thought it appears you were less enthused).
That excerpt from the Butler book has me wanting to read the book, now!
