When I was in my early twenties, for a person of my education and social background, the California ideology was the plain and simple truth. Happiness was the goal of every human being--we all know this. Happiness can be measured empirically--that's obvious too, you can just ask people whether they're happy and how happy they are. And if happiness can be measured empirically, then you can measure whether various policy interventions increase or decrease the sum total of human happiness.
